The VMA’s have created their fair share of crazy, unforgettable and memorable moments through their history. It seems that putting artists into this environment causes problems and disasters to happen. Some moments from the infamous award show are heavily ingrained in societies mind, and will not be forgotten anytime soon.
Kanye Announcing Run For Presidency 2020 (2015)
Kanye West after accepting his Vanguard Award speech decided to use the time to conduct a 13 minute speech and announce that he is running for presidency in 2020. He has my vote.
Miley Cyrus twerks on Robin Thicke (2013)
This could easily be the most controversial moment in the VMA’s history. Miley pressed a lot of buttons by twerking on Robin Thicke in 2013. It caused a moral panic among the more conservative viewers who told MTV too keep the awards clean. It also cemented Mileys new personality, in stark contrast to her Hannah Montana days.
Madonna Kisses Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera (2003)
Trying to prove how not innocent they were, Britney and Christina both tried to break out of the child star box via Madonna’s lips.
Bass Guitar Attacks Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic (1992)
Many things happened during Nirvana performance. MTV wanted them to play ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ but they wanted to play ‘Rape Me’, they decided to play ‘Lithium’ as a compromise, but Nirvana opened the song with ‘Rape Me’ lyrics before kicking into a great performance of ‘Lithium’. As the song ended they proceeded to destroy their instruments with bass guitarist Novoselic throwing his guitar in the air, only for it to land on his head, and then Grohl taunted Axl Rose by awkwardly calling his name.
Lady Gaga Wears a Meat Dress (2010)
Covered with 40 pounds of beef Lady Gaga somehow shifted attention from her 12 nominations to her Avant-garde fashion sense, wearing a dress made out meat. She later told Ellen DeGeneres that "And I am not a piece of meat."
Kanye's Infamous Interruption (2009)
I wonder how much this incident propelled Taylors career. Because I feel that this event changed the trajectory of her career. While she accepted her award for Best Female Video a hot tempered and drunk Kanye West stormed the stage and declared that "Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all-time!" before walking off.
Fiona Apple Declares 'This World Is Bullshit' (1997)
Fiona Apples speech was a bit different, while most artists thank their friends and family, Apple decided to say that “This world is bullshit. You shouldn't model your life on what we think is cool, and what we're wearing and what we're saying and everything. Go with yourself."
