FEATURE: We Play 'What Song...' With Darling James

Friday, April 15, 2016

Last year, Darling James' single 'Ultimatum Talk' appeared on rotation on triple j and racked up an incredible 100,000 plays on Spotify. This year, he has released 'The Itch' and will be playing co-headling shows with Machine Age next month. Before he hits the road, he has taken some time out to be apart of our latest edition of 'What Song...'.

What song reminds you of your youth? 'The Globe' by Big Audio Dynamite II
I had no idea this guy was in The Clash. Hell, I'd never heard of The Clash! But I knew the song was a lot more interesting than the majority of stuff that was filtering through to the small country town I grew up in (pre Triple J!!). It was weird and playful and alluded to a whole world of things I didn't understand but wanted to.

What song is your ultimate party track? 'Hard To Explain' by The StrokesI read an article last night waxing lyrical about the indie guitar music craze of 2001 - 2007ish and although I'm not often prone to indulging in nostalgia it did occur to me that I had a pretty good time in that scene. So, "Hard To Explain" by the Strokes. Failing that, "Love On Top" by Beyonce

What song would you love to sample? 'Love On Top' by Beyonce
"Love On Top" by Beyonce! But seriously, there's actually a lot of field recordings of non-Western music that would be fun to pull apart but the ethics of sampling people who may very well have not known they were being recorded in the first place, much less be able to be compensated for it makes this impossible. Probably for the best.

What song would you make your personal theme song? 'Mr Noah' by Panda Bear or 'You Got Me Hummin' by Sam & Dav

What song was last stuck in your head? 'Hypercolour' by Ali Barter

What do you have on repeat right now? Shahbaaz by Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn

What song is your guilty pleasure? 'Life In The Fast Lane' by Eagles
