SINGLE REVIEW: Major Lazer — 'Cold Water' (ft Justin Bieber + MØ)

Tuesday, August 2, 2016

July 22nd has brought in fresh and exciting works by Major Lazer. Their new single, ‘Cold Water’, is a feel-good summer tune and a song you’ll associate good memories with in years to come.

Pioneers of modern reggae and dancehall, Major Lazer has received international success and recognition for revitalizing pop music with symphonies consisting of vibrant and mellow tunes. ‘Cold Water’ features vocals from Justin Bieber and MØ, who has also lent her voice to Major Lazer’s huge hit ‘Lean On’. But it’s Bieber’s voice that brings this song to life with his euphonious and honeyed tones—a perfect match for the track’s electronic beats.

Listening to the anthemic melody of this single, I can’t help but think of young love and summertime flings: “I’ll be your lifeline tonight/ I won’t let go”. Co-written by Ed Sheeran, these lyrical expressions of romance contain an air of naivety, like the words are spoken by a person with a starry-eyed, but endearing, misconception of love. And for me, that makes the track not only catchy, but also oddly charming.

There’s a dreamy essence to ‘Cold Water’ that will leave you reminiscing about summer pastimes and looking forward to your next long drive to warm sands and cool waters.
