Feature: We Play 'What Song...' with Gemma Ray

Monday, April 17, 2017

Berlin-based, British-born Gemma Ray is kicking off her tour this week. Mid 2016 saw her release The Exodus Suite, which received a mass of international praise. If you want to catch her on tour, scroll down for dates below.

What song reminds you of your youth?
This reminds me of being a young teenager and learning to play music via jamming with friends in demountable rooms we shared and pretty much lived in.

What song is your ultimate party track?
Bo Diddley  'I Don’t Like You'.

What song do you listen to before you jump on stage?
Nothing, I hate listening to music before I go on stage – but if I did, it would be 'Black Sabbath' by Black Sabbath.

What song would you make your theme song?
I reference this piece of music way too much, but it sounds exactly how I feel. I could probably happily live with this playing on loop in my head 24/7. For me, it’s the most perfect piece of music.

What song reminds you of your first heartbreak?
My heart hasn’t been broken, but when I listen to this on repeat it breaks every time teenage style.

What do you have on repeat right now?
We Insist! The Freedom Now Suite (Max Roach feat. Abbie Lincoln).
Not sure if I’m allowed to reference an entire record but I love so much as a piece of work, from the political cover (a white man serving black men in a cafe in 1960) and journey it takes you on from beginning to end. If I had to select one track it would be ‘Driva Man’ featuring Abbey Lincoln and Coleman Hawkins.

What song is your guilty pleasure?
But I don’t feel any guilt, best listened to with the original promo video.
