It’s been four long years since Paramore released their last album. Over the last few months the members of Paramore Hayley Williams, Taylor York, and newly returned Zac Farro have been teasing fans on social media with hints about their new album. Rumoured swirled, and speculation was rife and eventually, their first single, ‘Hard Times’ from their new album, After Laughter which will be released May 12 — popped up and fans went wild.
For all those worried about the new poppier direction, the lyrics are as emo as ever. The track opens with the lyrics, “All that I want Is to wake up fine Tell me that I’m alright That I Ain’t gonna die". The polished and poppy persona will make you want to dance the night away while simultaneously wanting to scream into a pillow.
This is the type of song that will be stuck in your head for days. The beat and lyrics are catchy and are perfectly combined with Hayley’s electrifying voice. The backing vocals from Taylor and Zac add substance to the track to form a cohesive and fun song.
The electro-pop route is a fitting and perfect progression for the trio. Paramore is not afraid of taking risks and changing up their sound. They are chameleons of genre, manoeuvring between them with ease. There are flickers of their former punk sound, which have been incorporated perfectly.
