EP of the Week: Melis – Parallels

Tuesday, December 12, 2017

Last month, we featured Melis’ stunning single ‘Holding Hands’ (link) — since then, we’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of her EP Parallels. Parallels showcases Melis’ impassioned songwriting and ability to capture the rawest of emotions in her music.

Opening up with the title track, the start sees her set the tone for the rest of the EP. ‘Parallels’ is brimming with sentimental lyricism and feelings. The bulk of the track is minimal, but becomes more intense towards the end. This build-up is full of ferocity and will give you goosebumps.

‘Flowers’ further shows Melis’ skill to use emotive lyrics that play on the heartstrings of listeners. The simplicity of the electronic production allows her words to take control of the track and remain at the forefront. Despite the fact that the song contains elements of heartbreak, there’s also a degree of hope to her lyrics — “It's just a bump in the road / With distance to go / So just don't think about it”.

The next track ‘Holding Hands’ is mellow, yet enthralling. Again it’s her lyrics that are a highlight, with the production providing excellent support to her reflective words. 'Holding Hands’ is also reminiscent of an anthem — the words are catchy and you can’t help but feel to urge to repeat them aloud whilst driving in the car, particularly the chorus. The chorus will be stuck in your head after one listen.

Melis mixes thing up with the next track ‘Sober (Over you)’. Though she maintains her incredible lyricism, the track sees her use intricate sounds in her production. Both work harmoniously to create a magical wonderland of captivating soundscapes. The final track ‘So Nobody Knows’ sees the EP end as beautifully as it started.

Parallels is an exciting step forward for Melis, and if this is a sneak preview into what we can expect from her in the future, she’s set to dominate in 2018.
