Feature: We Play 'What Song...' with Animal Ventura

Thursday, December 7, 2017

Fernando Aragone aka Animal Ventura recently shared his new single 'Animal', which would squeeze in nicely into your summer playlist (*hint hint*). If you like what you hear, be sure to check out his album Forrest St. (link). He's currently on the road touring as the support for The Beautiful Girls' 15th Anniversary Tour, as well as playing a couple of his own headlining shows in Byron Bay and Newport. Though he's a busy bee at the moment, he took a little time out to share some of his fave tunes.

What song reminds you of your youth?
‘Love Missile F1-11’ by Sigue Sigue Sputnik
I think one of the first memories I have is ‘Love Missile F1-11’ from Sigue Sigue Sputnik’s album Flaunt It. It was so fresh and ahead of its time. I don’t remember exactly how that record came about in my house, but the cover got my attention with those Japanese words and the metal hero beaming lights from his eyes and fire through his fingers. Love the interludes on the album as well. Still now a very modern and relevant album I think.

What song would you love to sample?
'The Payback' by James Brown
Gosh! That’s a hard one, but if I had to pick one it would probably be the drumbeat on the intro of James Brown’s ‘Payback’. So simple yet so groovy. Actually, any of his horn section would be awesome to sample too.

What song did you last listen to?
‘No Wrong’ by Bahamas
Just saw them live in Sydney and I have to say it was one of the best things I’ve seen this year. Afie is such a great guitar player and songwriter — his comedy and banter is a stand out also. It was a great mix of stand up comedy and amazing music.

What song do you wish you collaborated on?
‘Blackbird’ by The Beatles
There’s so many on my list but I have to pick ‘Blackbird’ by The Beatles. It sounds so much like an innocent and simple song, but the hidden meaning addressing the civil rights happening at that time in America, and the melody is probably one of the most beautiful things ever written.

What song is your ultimate party track?
‘What I Got’ by Sublime
For many years Sublime was my favourite band and still is somehow. Something about that song just puts me in a good mood straight away. Maybe is the line “Life is too short so love the one you got…” and I always relate to that.

What song has been your favourite track of this year?
'May' by Jordan Rakei
I’ve been listening to a lot of Jordan Rakei’s new album ‘Wallflower’.  There are some beautiful songs in there, but my favourite at the moment is ‘May’. The piano transition from the first track and the drums really got me, there’s a very clever bridge and his vocals are stunning, that’s my favourite track this year.
