Interview: Questions with Ali Barter
Monday, January 29, 2018
With her appearance at Zoo Twilights with The Preatures fast-approaching, Ali Barter reflects on last year, gives us a little insight into what she has in-store for 2018, plus shares her favourite animal.
You had a massive 2017 with the release of your debut album, plus toured extensively, what were some of your favourite moments?
We had a lot of fun last year on the road. I think my favourite shows were in Adelaide, Perth and towns like Mandurah WA or Wollongong, NSW. People were just loose and having such a good time. I don't know what it is about Adelaide and WA but they are always down to party. Other then that, I met Chrissie Hyde backstage at the Stevie Nicks concert and we had a nice chat, so that was pretty cool.
Do you plan to unleash new music sometime during 2018?
Yes! I’m in the process of writing and locking down recording time at the moment so should have a new song for y’all at the end of the year! I’ve been taking myself off on little trips alone to Daylesford and coastal Victoria to write which is nice so there’s lots of new music to start working with. Stay tuned…
What lessons did you learn after creating your debut release that you will take with you when the time comes to create your next project?
I learnt that simple is good and listen to your gut. I am doing things a little different this time around, feeling a bit more confident so it will be exciting to hear what happens when we get in the studio!
You’re appearing at the Zoo Twilights with The Preatures, what are you most looking forward to with the show coming up?
Well, I’m a huge fan of the Preatures and I have never seen them live so I’m just excited to be watching their set, to be honest. It will be fun to play at the Zoo too, with all the animals!
Since you’re a Melbourne local, will you be checking out any of the others shows?
Hopefully! I am away most weekends but I’d love to see Ben Folds and Tim and Neil Finn, if I’m in town.
Finally, in the spirit of Zoo Twilights, which animal is your spirit animal and why?
I’m a big fan of Otters. They like to hold hands with each other while they swim which is pretty cute. They’re pretty chilled out too, so I reckon my spirit animal is an otter.
You can catch Ali Barter supporting The Preatures on 9th February at Zoo Twilights, Melbourne Zoo. Tickets are available here.
