Now Playing: MGMT – ‘Me & Michael’

Sunday, February 25, 2018

As the instantly recognisable synth riffs of MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular lay comfortably in the back of our minds. 2018 brings us a new facet of this indie/electro/pop outfit. This comeback track (as some are calling it) has synth flavours reminiscent of Tame Impala’s Currents laden with MGMT’s undeniable ability to write a solid catchy tune.

Two kicks, then we are introduced to a plethora of lush instruments transporting our ears to the synth driven 80’s. Then with a fill, a synth pad, drums and bass, we are treated to MGMT’s most pop-centric track since 'Time to Pretend', 'Kids' and 'Electric Feel'. Throughout the song we hear Andrew’s dreamy vocal singing what lyrically presents itself as a friendship ballad. Underlying this, is a driving beat and every time the chorus hits a subtle shaker strikes the ears making you want to let out a laid-back boogie. Once we near the end, a distorted synth solo creates a bed for Andrews ad-libs perfectly closing this memorable song.

So for those who loved MGMT during Oracular Spectacular and also appreciated their last two albums this song is a special treat as it feels like a captivating accumulation of who MGMT once were, are and will be.
