Feature: We Play 'What Song...' with Wild Meadows

Saturday, March 10, 2018

Earlier in this month, Wild Meadows shared their debut self-titled album (which you can stream below!). Dylan from the band took some time out to share some of his favourite tunes with us. Also, scroll down to find out where you can catch them on the road.

What song reminds you of your youth?
'Old Man Sam' by Spiderbait
My sister absolutely smashed this song in particular when it was released. I was a mere six or seven years old but every time I hear it I’m taken back to that particular house we were living in at the time in beachside Melbourne. I think she’d play it deliberately loud to rankle my parents in typical teen-angst fashion. Either that or the theme to Round the Twist – what a tune!

What song is your ultimate party track?
'Wind It Up' by Mumbo Jumbo
Well that’s always changing, but ever since I discovered 'Wind It Up' by Mumbo Jumbo on the 2016 Midnite Spares compilation I’ve included it in any party playlist.

What song do you listen to before you jump on stage?
Whatever the band before us is playing. We’re always too busy dealing with nerves, sorting out our gear and making sure we have a fresh beer to worry too much about a pump-up track.

What song would you make your theme song?
'Story Time' by Malcolm Middleton and David Shrigley
It’s equal parts ridiculous and bizarre, and I really just want you to share it so others get to hear it.

What song reminds you of your first heartbreak?
'That’s No Way to Say Goodbye' by Leonard Cohen

What do you have on repeat right now?
'Silk Spirit' by Drahla
It’s a recent find and I absolutely love the post-punk driving bass with the off-kilter spoken-word vocal style.

What song is your guilty pleasure?
'The Song of OJ' by Jay-Z
I’m not really into the idea of a ‘guilty pleasure’ because I think you should embrace whatever you’re into, whether a song happens to be a raging commercial success or a scratchy Bandcamp upload from your mate’s esoteric side-project. But, if I can put forward a track that I guess I was surprised to enjoy it’d be Jay-Z's 'The Song of OJ' from his 4:44 album from 2017. I’d never really listened to his stuff before but that song in particular just stands out and features some great production. Plus anything that samples Nina Simone is fine by me.
