Feature: The Anatomy of 'How Was I Supposed To Know' with The VANNS

The VANNS are about to embark on a tour to celebrate the release of their single 'How Was I Supposed To Know'. Before they kick things off tomorrow at Yours & Owls Festival in Wollongong, Cam from the group took some time out to break down the single for us.

We wrote ‘How Was I Supposed To Know’… over a pretty long time span. I remember we were rehearsing at Jim’s house mid-late last year, and I was sitting outside the rehearsal studio having lunch, and the boys started jamming the chords. I walked in and started playing the riff and solo and I’m pretty sure we came up with the final arrangement then and there. The lyrics came later. Jim would kinda play around with a melody and a couple of lines that stuck and then he and I got together in a room and wrote the lyrics.

The story behind ‘How Was I Supposed To Know’ is… frustration. Confusion. Anger. Envy. It centralises around a break up and seeing someone you were (and still are) in love with seemingly moving on easily, and wanting to know how they do it.

My favourite lyric is… “confined / caught up in the piss-up that’s your life”

It was made… pretty easily actually. In terms of writing and recording it, I’d say it was one of the more painless tunes (from the album). The mission statement was fairly simple: energy and honesty.

Our main inspiration was… from a guitarist point of view, I have this guitar pedal on my board called a Foxrox ‘OCTRON.’ I definitely wouldn’t have written that riff without it.

It sounds best when… we play it live. It’s such a fun live tune.
