Feature: We Play 'What Song...' with Luke Player from The Pinheads

Sunday, January 20, 2019

Before The Pinheads kick off their 'Not Like You' tour (and an appearance at this year's The Farmer & The Owl Festival!), Luke Player from the group dives into some of his favourite songs. Scroll down and find out where The Pinheads will be stopping by — you won't want to miss it!

What song reminds you of your youth?
Probably ‘Starman’ or ‘Moonage Daydream’ from Bowie’s 1972 The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust. Bowie songs always featured on old skate movies that me and my brother (Jez- singer of The Pinheads) would watch before we’d take train trips to Sydney City to jump off things, I was probably about 13 or 14 at the time.

What song would you love to sample?
I don’t really know how to sample but if I could steal the sound off Highway 61 Revisited, any song, I would. Or the drum beat in the chorus of Norma Tanega’s 'A Street That Rhymes At 6 A.M'. Or if I could just steal someone's voice box- maybe Ray Charles, and implant it into my body I would. is that sampling?

What song did you last listen to?
‘Fire Engine’ by The 13th Floor Elevators, ‘The Psychedelic Sounds Of..’ is on the turntable right now. I think this album has some of the most influential guitar playing ever, and it’s got electric jug!!!

What song do you wish you collaborated on?
Maybe Neil Young’s 'Revolution Blues', just to be there in that scene and see Rusty Kershaw flop around the floor like a serpent- too many honey slides. Either that or ‘Torn and Frayed’ with The Stones at Nellcote or ‘Fallin’ Rain’ with Link Wray in the 3 track shack.

I don’t really feel like I could’ve contributed anything to any of my favourite songs though so not sure if collaborate is the right word, I just would’ve liked to sit there.

What song is your ultimate party track?
’Foggy Notion’ by The Velvet Underground or ‘Down On The Street’ by The Stooges. Although I gotta admit I don’t think I’ve ever been at a party that played either of these songs, but wouldn’t it be cool?? Anything from the Stooges, especially 'Funhouse', is gonna rev everyone up- it’s just very sexy music.

What song was your favourite track of last year?
I don’t think I had one, probably just one my friends songs. I quite liked Helena Massey’s ‘Honey, A Gift’ off her EP Temperance A Suncloud. I’m not gonna lie and I feel guilty to say I don’t really listen to much new music. But what are you gonna do?
