It's been a rollercoaster of a journey for London-based dance-pop duo NIMMO — despite the challenges they've faced, Sarah Nimmo and Reva Gauntlett have powered through, and this June, their debut album will finally be out in the wild for us to devour. Until that happens in a few months, Sarah from the duo talks us through writing, the album and 'No More'.
What have you been up to while you’ve been in Australia?
We have just played two shows with Beats by Dre and Heaps Gay in Sydney as part if the Mardi Gras which was amazing, it's our first time in Australia so just been exploring and giving that beach life a go haha!
Congrats on the release of your single ‘No More’ earlier this year, what’s the story behind the track?
We wrote this track a year so ago and it came about at a time when a lot of big changes were happening in our lives. We went to Lisbon for five weeks to just shake off cobwebs and ending up shoot the video there. The trip was wild and felt like a leap — which basically what 'No More' is all about.
Do you ever find yourself inspired by places when writing new music?
I think we have definitely been so inspired by London when writing. Thats obviously because it's our home but also it's demanding and exhilarating and constantly inspiring us. But also we took lots of inspiration from the music scene in Lisbon too. Once you’ve heard the dance music scene over there its changes your thinking on how to party and dance forever.
Do you ever gravitate towards other art forms when writing?
We tend to go to exhibitions when in the middle of creative processes as its so different to music but helps trigger and inspire us which is always really relaxing. We are always reading. Storytelling is always something we are drawn to. A good book on the go while writing music is a great way to stay inspired and relaxed. Our friends are in amazing performance/dance/chereograohy scene which we always love delving into and getting lost in too. It's insanely moving and again so different to the way we think when writing music.
It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey for you both, what have been your biggest lessons you’ve learnt along the way so far?
To trust ourselves and know what we have learnt and experienced has been for the best. What's the quote? “life is what happens to you while you’re waiting for it to happen?” something like that haha/
What has the process been like working on your debut album?
It's been a staggered one but also great. We did some singles a couple of years ago then went away and recorded an EP and out of those two years writing and touring we put together our album which we are super proud of! It's out in June.
Do you have any nerves about it being released?
No! we are just really excited to give it to you all!
Along with the release of the album, what else do you have planned for 2019?
We are about to announce an exciting tour for the summer which we can't reveal the details of just yet but stay tuned. We have two more singles to release from our record over the next two months leading up to it too!
